Explanation of name:  Generic name means thick-spike.  Lutea means yellow.

Recognition:  Dramatic upright perennial subshrub with erect inflorescences of showy yellow bracts.

Landscape uses: Bedding plant used to fill space with vertical bright yellow candles.  The plants have an even, neat, upright appearance.  BR1 suggests annual hard pruning. Propagate with cuttings.  UFFPS452 suggests having this species rise above a low groundcover.
