Explanation of name:
Generic name commemorates Swedish botanist Carl Thunberg, 1743-1822, student of
Linnaeus. Erecta means erect.
Natural range:
Africa
Recognition:
Shrub having opposite ovate leaves. Flowers solitary, on pedicels from leaf
axils, to almost 3” long, bent, funnel-shaped. The lower portion of the floral
tube white, the upper portion blue to purple with a yellow eye.
‘Alba’ is a white-flowered
cultivar.
‘Blue Moon’ is a blue-flowered
cultivar.
Landscape uses:
Clumped or massed, specimen, foundation, flowering hedge. Protect from harsh
conditions. Escaped cultivation in southernmost Florida (WU2)
