Cananga odorata (Lam.) Hook. F & T. Thoms.

cah-NANG-gah   oh-dor-AY-tah

Annonaceae

Explanation of name: Cananga is the local Malayan name for the tree. Odorata presumably refers to the fragrant flowers.

Natural range: Tropical Asia

Recognition: A tall, narrow tree having a mastlike central trunk and narrow elliptic leaves with the edges bent upwards, and with tapered tips. The leaves resemble those of the closely related Pond Apple. The greenish flowers are perfume-fragrant and have 2,” narrow, yellow-green drooping petals.

Landscape uses: This tree is valued for its fragrant flowers used in the perfume industry, including Chanel #5.
