Explanation of
name: For Ilex, see Ilex cassine. Cornuta means
horned.
Natural range:
This is a cultivar.
Recognition:
Small conical or rounded or vase-shaped tree or large shrub with usually
multiple stems and with extremely dark green, glossy leaves having a point at
the tip, and occasionally small points along the edges, the leaf blades convex.
Separate male not needed for berry production. For comparison with the closely
related ‘Nellie R. Stevens’ see the follwing entry.
Landscape uses:
Low-maintenance, tough, low-input, drought resistant small tree. Better in
regions to the north of South Florida. ‘Burfordii ‘Nana’ is in common use,
mostly in cooler than subtropical areas.
