Arecaceae
Explanation
of name:
For generic name, see Chamaedorea cataractarum. Epithet commemorates
Ernest August, 19th Century German monarch (JON).
Spelling
note:
The spelling consistent with the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature
places –ii at the end of the name augustii.
Natural
range:
Mesoamerica (ELL). Understory in shaded rainforest (JON)
Recognition:
Small (6’), single-trunked, simple-leaved palm with prominent, pale trunk rings.
Unlike most palms, the leaves are simple and shaped like large fish tails.
Chamaedorea metallica O. F. Cook ex H. E. Moore has similar leaves,
which differ by having a metallic silvery sheen. This species is smaller (to 4’
tall), and has less tendency toward the adventitious roots produced by C.
ernesti-augustii (BA2, JON, MEE).
Landscape
uses:
A unique dwarf specimen palm for moist shaded conditions (JON). ELL gives 3-6
months for germination, preferably with bottom heat.
