Scarlet
Milkweed
Asclepias curassavica
L.
ah-SCLEEP-ee-ahs
cure-ah-SAW-vee-caw
Asclepiadaceae
Explanation
of name:
Generic name from Aesculapius, ancient Greek physician (FER). The
specific epithet probably refers to the Caribbean island Curacao.
Natural
range:
Probably South America, now weedy (BA2). Escaped cultivation in Florida (PBCC)
Recognition:
Slender perennial/small shrub about 4’ tall, with opposite, narrow lanceolate
leaves, milky sap, and flame-colored flowers. Seeds on silky parachutes
Landscape
uses:
Due to weedy tendencies, not recommended. Often used as perennial or small shrub
for bright colorful flowers in open, sunny, sites where drought tolerance is
desired. A butterfly garden species but probably better to use native Milkweeds,
of which there are several, including Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa
L.).
