Podranea ricasoliana

Pink Trumpet Vine

Podranea ricasoliana (Tanfani) Sprague

poe-DRAIN-ee-ah  rick-ah-sol-ee-AIN-ah

Bignoniaceae

Explanation of name: Podranea is an anagram of Pandorea (see below). Specific epithet commemorates Italian Baron Ricasoli (BA1). Note spelling, ricasoliana, NOT ricosoliana.

Synonym: Pandorea ricasoliana Baill. (see below)

Natural range: South Africa

Recognition: Robust woody vine with opposite compound leaves and bilaterally symmetrical, tubular, showy flowers light pink striped with red.

Confusingly similar to Pandorea jasminoides Schum., which differs by having the fruits short and oblong, and the calyx nearly absent and not puffy. Podranea, by contrast, has linear fruits and inflated calyx. (BA1)

Landscape uses: Robust, fast-growing, showy-flowered vine, flowers mostly in spring and fall.
