Tecoma capensis

Cape-Honeysuckle

Tecoma capensis (Thunb.) Lindl.

teh-COE-mah kay-PEN-sis

Explanation of name: Generic name from an ancient native-Mexican name. The specific name alludes to origins in South Africa.

Synonymy: This species is traditionally known as Tecomaria capensis Spach. (but see WU2).

Natural range: South Africa (BA1)

Recognition: Robust woody vine having opposite pinnate leaves with 5-9 serrate-margined leaflets. Flowers orange, large, showy, bilaterally symmetrical. Differs from Pyrostegia (Flame Vine) by having serrate (vs. entire), tendril-free, more-numerous  (5-9 vs. 2-3) leaflets.

Landscape uses: Woody vine with large tubular orange flowers. Grown on fences and on other strong supports. Popular and widely grown in our area. Attracts hummingbirds. May irritate the skin.
