Explanation
of name:
Generic name from an ancient native-Mexican name. The specific name alludes to
origins in South Africa.
Synonymy:
This species is traditionally known as Tecomaria capensis Spach. (but see
WU2).

range:
South Africa (BA1)
Recognition:
Robust woody vine having opposite pinnate leaves with 5-9 serrate-margined
leaflets. Flowers orange, large, showy, bilaterally symmetrical. Differs from
Pyrostegia (Flame Vine) by having serrate (vs. entire), tendril-free,
more-numerous (5-9 vs. 2-3) leaflets.
Landscape
uses:
Woody vine with large tubular orange flowers. Grown on fences and on other
strong supports. Popular and widely grown in our area. Attracts hummingbirds.
May irritate the skin.
