Explanation of name:
The generic name is an indigenous name for the tree. The specific epithet
probably honors Francisco de Orellana, Spanish explorer.
Natural range:
American Tropics, but unknown in the wild
Recognition:
Small tree having palmately veined heart-shaped leaves with peltate
(tack-shaped) hairs, pinkish flowers with numerous stamens, and distinctive
bristly red pods.
Landscape uses:
Small novelty tree with attractive pink flowers and bristly red fruits.
Notes:
The seeds are sources of dyes in tropical regions. Dye uses include henna,
body coloration, lip coloration, and food coloration. There are many historical
medicinal uses.
