Explanation
of name:
Generic
name from a Greek aichme for spear in reference to the pointed sepals
(BA1)
Recognition:
Leaves in a tubular rosette, the blades green or patterned, the margins spiny.
Prone to produce basal offshoots. Inflorescence a raceme or panicle, when a
panicle usually narrow (flowers rarely nested among leaves). Flowers usually
yellow or red, or blue at the tips. Fruits usually small colorful berries
Landscape
uses:
Most are epiphytes but perform well in containers or in the ground. Most prefer
bright light. Best in evenly moist well drained medium, and with the interior of
the tank wet. Good air circulation is necessary. Mild fertilizer every third
watering (watering 2-3 times/week). Fine houseplants
