Cryptanthus fosterianus

Earth Stars

Cryptanthus

kryp-TAN-thus

Bromeliaceae

Explanation of name: Crypt is Greek meaning hidden, and anthos means flower.

Natural range: Mostly Brazil in diverse natural habitats, sun to shade, wet to dry

Recognition:  Plants are terrestrial with strong root systems and hug the ground like fallen stars. Leaves are wrinkled and striped in pink, red, green, brown,  or  white. The flowers are small and white at the center of the plant.

Landscape uses:   Grown flush with the ground. Can be used in floral decorations or combined with succulents and cacti. Plants can be used in terrariums. Bright indirect light will keep the colors intense. Shaded light dulls the coloration.
