Dyckia fosteriana

Dyckia

DIE-kee-uh

Bromeliaceae

Explanation of name:  Named Prince Joseph Salm-Rerfferscheidd-Dyck a 19th century Russian botanist (1713-1861)

Natural range: Brazil

Recognition:  Dyckias are terrestrial. They have particularly stiff spiny semi-succulent leaves. The flowers on stalks emerging from the sides of the plants are red, yellow, or orange.

Landscape uses: They grow in rocky sunny areas. Most species clump to form mats. Can be combined with succulents and cacti.  Dyckias are cold tolerant by Bromeliad standards, withstanding temperatures in the 30s.  They are drought tolerant but drought during active growth is not ideal.
