genus with some 45 species
nid-you-LAIR-ee-um
Bromeliaceae
Explanation
of name:
Generic name from Latin nidus, for nest in reference to the shape of the
rosette
Recognition:
Similar to neoregelias, having the flowers nested among the leaves, and having
brightly colored leaves at the center of the plant. Unlike most neoregelias, in
Nidularium the entire leaf is colorful (not just the leaf base).
Produces basal offshoots. Often hybridized with neoregelias.
Landscape
uses:
Among the most shade-loving commonly cultivated Bromeliads. Keep the cup wet.
