Explanation of name: Generic name for French naturalist Marius Porte http://bsi.org/brom_info/genera.html

Recognition: Large terrestrial bromeliads with strap-shaped serrate leaves having purple spines and minimal tank formation; the paniculate inflorescence showy with red and purple coloration, followed by colorful purplish berries.

Landscape uses:  Large selections grown on the ground as outdoor landscaping plants.
