Explanation of name: Generic name for Elais Tillands (1640-1693), Swedish botanist (BA1)

Recognition:  Usually epiphytic and usually non-tank-forming. 

Landscape uses:   Uses depend on the species and cultivars of this extremely variable genus, which includes most of the Florida native Bromeliads, including Spanish Moss and the showy Cardinal Airplant (T. fasciculata).
