Bromeliaceae
subfamily
Tillandsioideae
Explanation of name:
Generic name for
botanist Elias Tillands, allegedly a
reference to hydrophobia by both the man and the plants.
Species name means fascicle, or bundle,
probably in reference to the fascicle of leaves.
Natural range: Native
to Florida, extending to South America
Recognition: Native airplant
with bright red and yellow inflorescence.
Usually epiphytic and usually non-tank-forming
Landscape uses: Plants can be
mounted on trees, best enjoyed in its native habitats of hammocks and swamps.
Uses depend on the species and cultivars of this extremely variable genus, which
includes most of the Florida native Bromeliads, including Spanish Moss.
