Tillandsia streptophylla

Strap-Leaf Tillandsia

Tillandsia streptophylla Scheidw. ex C.Morren

till-ANDZ-ee-ah strep-toe-FILL-ah

Bromeliaceae subfamily Tillandsioideae

Explanation of name:  For the genus, see T. bulbosa.  Streptophylla means “strap leaf.”

Natural range: Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Caribbean

Recognition: Plant has twisted recurved leaves. Blooms are mauve and last for weeks.

Landscape uses: Bright indirect light. Can be used as an indoor plant. Hardiness zones 10a-11 Temperature range 60-75 degrees. Called the Shirley Temple plant because of its ability to form long ringlets with the leaves. The amount of moisture the plant receives determines the shape of the leaf form. The more the water the straighter the leaves. The less water will make the leaves curl. It is more susceptible to rot than other species.
