Explanation of name:  Named for Dutch botanist W.H. deVriese (1806-1862)( BA1). Splendens is self-explanatory.

Natural range:   South America, Mesoamerica

Recognition:    Smooth margined foliage with brown bands growing in a rosette. The plant produces a bright red inflorescence in a flattened spike.

Landscape uses:   Vriesea splendens is epiphytic. Because of the interesting patterned leaves this plant is grown for its leaves as well as the flower.
