Callisia fragrans (Lindl.) Woodson

caw-LIZ-ee-ah  FRAY-grans

Commelinaceae

Explanation of name: Generic name comes from Greek callos for beauty. Fragrans means fragrant.

Natural range: Mesoamerica

Recognition: An aggressive, spreading, strongly stoloniferous groundcover where each rosette, standing up to about a foot tall, resembles a Bromeliad. Small white flowers rising from the rosettes on arching wands.

Landscape uses: An effective, forgiving, space-filling groundcover. This is the perfect formula for an invasive exotic species. This one is listed as Category II by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council. Not recommended.
