Explanation of name: The generic name translates loosely as “flower borne of the earth.” Undatus means wavy in reference to the wavy leaf blades.

Natural range: South America

Recognition: Small, shade-loving perennials reminiscent of small Calathea or Maranta but without the swelling at the top of the petiole. Leaves wrinkled, striped with light green and dark green on top, purplish below

Landscape uses: Small tender perennial having striped, wrinkled foliage for shaded localities
