Croton
Codiaeum variegatum
Blume var. pictum
CODE-ee-um
very-ah-GATE-um
Euphorbiaceae
Explanation
of name:
According to BA1, the generic name probably comes from Greek for head in
reference to the use of the leaves in wreaths. Variegatum means
variegated.
Natural
range:
Tropical Pacific
Recognition:
Shrubs with varied brightly colored, stiff, waxy leaves, naturally green but in
cultivation with bright patterns of reds and yellows from viral infections. The
shapes and sizes are highly variable, with the leaves often irregular in outline
and along the margins, sometimes twisted. The cultivars are beyond counting.
Landscape
uses:
One of the most-used landscaping selections in hot climates, practically
ubiquitous. A tough colorful shrub of broad tolerances, an easy source of
bright, year-round, foolproof color. Harmonizing the coarse glossy, bright
colored leaves with other plantings is a challenge. One of the most-used shrubs
in tropical landscaping.
