of name:
From Greek jatros (physician) and trophe (food) in reference to
alleged medicinal properties of most species (DEH).

Recognition:
Shrub with irregularly lobed leaves (often resembling a mitten) and bright red
coin-sized round male flowers having yellow stamens. Fruits are 3-lobed.
‘Compacta’ is a small cultivar. ‘Rosea’ is a pink-flowered cultivar.
Landscape
uses:
Specimen or accent, valued for toughness, drought-tolerance, and bright flowers
through most of the year. Toxic. Susceptible to mites, scale, and mealybugs.
