Explanation of name: From Greek jatros (physician) and trophe (food) in reference to attributed medicinal properties of most species (DEH). The specific epithet means gouty-foot.

Natural range: Mesoamerica, possibly also West Indies

Recognition: Semi-succulent shrub with the trunk swollen basally. Leaves peltate (petiole attached at the center of the blade rather than at the edge). Flowers bright red

Landscape uses: Specimen, novelty, or container plant under dry sunny conditions. Does not tolerate sogginess
