Rabbit's Foot Fern

Davallia fejeensis Hook.

dah-VAL-ee-ah  fee-jee-EN-sus

Ferns subfamily Davalliaceae

Explanation of name:  Edmond Davall (1763-1798) was a Swiss plant collector.  The specific epithet refers to Fiji.  –ensis means "lives in."

Natural range: Fiji

Recognition:  Finely dissected fronds and with distinctive thick, furry, creeping rhizome

Landscape uses:  Mostly grown in containers in protected partial shade.  Requires ample moisture but well drained (the species is an epiphyte at heart).   Excellent where it can spill over the sides of a container or basket.   Extreme conditions are trouble.  Easy to cultivate from the fuzzy (rabbit's foot) rhizome.
