Explanation of name: The generic name is based on Roman C. Mucius Scaevola, who burned his right hand, making him left-handed.  The flower looks as though ½ is missing.  Charles Plumier (1646-1704) was a prominent botanist known for collecting in the Caribbean..

Natural range: Florida, Caribbean, Africa

Recognition: Shrub or subshrub usually of coastal dune habits, the leaves obovate, somewhat succulent, flat. Flowers white. Fruits black.
