A small
worldwide family of some 30 genera and 100 species. Plants mostly trees and
shrubs with alternate leaves. Leaves stipulate, often palmate. Flowers small,
often in dense heads, with sepals and no petals (or with no sepals and no
petals); anthers often with an elongated connective. Ovary with 2 chambers.
Fruits woody capsules with 1 seed per locule. (Family data largely from SMI).
