A tiny
family of one New World, mostly tropical, woody genus and 42 species. Leaves
alternate, simple, stipuleless, fragrant when crushed. Flowers variable but
tending toward an undifferentiated perianth with several distinct tepals
(petal-like organs when there is no separate calyx), variable numbers of
stamens, and variable numbers of separate pistils, each with a single ovule.
