Explanation
of name:
Named for Andreas Cesalpini (1519-1603) who was an Italian botanist,
philosopher, and physician to Pope Clement VIII (DEH) . Mexicana means
of Mexico.

Recognition:
Small tree. Leaves bipinnate with 3-7 pinnae and 3-5 pairs of elliptic or oval
leaflets, less than 2" long. Flowers yellow, showy, less than 2". Fruit a flat
legume, 2"- 4" long (HOR, UFFPS82, BA2).
