Explanation
of name:
Calliandra means beautiful stamen. Haematocephala means blood red
head (DEH).
Natural
range:
Bolivia (DEH)
Recognition:
Shrub. Leaves bipinnate with 2 pairs of pinnae, which contain 4-10 pairs of
leaflets, to 4" long. Flowers in globular, powder puff heads, corolla is
reddish, filaments white at the base and red toward the apex. Fruit a brown
linear-oblanceolate legume, to 5" long (DEH, BA2, WA1)

Notes:
2 cultivars are common. Calliandra haematocehala Nana is 3'-5'
tall and has red flowers. (UFFPS89) Calliandra haematocephala Alba
is 6'-8' tall and has white flowers. (UFFPS88)
