Explanation of name: Calliandra means beautiful stamen. Surinamensis  means of Surinam. (DEH)

Natural range: N.E. South America (DEH)

Recognition: Spreading shrub.  Leaves  bipinnate with 1 pair of  pinnae, which contain 8-12 pairs of oblong leaflets, to 1/2" to 3/4" long.  Flowers in globular, powder puff heads, calyx and corolla are green to yellowish, numerous pink and white stamens. Fruit an oblong legume, to 4" long (DEH, BA2).
