Explanation
of name:
Pithecellobium means “monkey earring,” referring to the contorted pods of
some species (HAM). Flexicaule means bent stem.
Natural
range:
Northeast Mexico and south Texas (BA2)
Recognition:
Tree. Leaves even pinnate with elliptic leaflets 1"-2" long. Flowers whitish
yellow, mimosoid, less than 1" wide. Fruit a legume, 3" to 6" long (HOR, BA2,
UFST483)
