Explanation of name: From the Arabic name for date, tamar, and hindi, meaning Indian. Indica means of India.(STE)   Thus, we have an Indian date from India.

Natural range: India (BA2); Africa (ISE) 

Recognition: Large glabrate tree.  Leaves odd-pinnate with 9-15 pairs of broadly oblong leaflets, about ½" long.  Flowers pinkish (yellow and red striate), 3 petals, about 1/2" long.  Fruit oblong straight legume, 2" to 6" long (ISE, BA2, HOR,WA1)
