sigh-sal-AY-nah
Liliaceae
Explanation
of name:
The generic name comes from Greek for noble. Sisal is the fiber derived from
this species.
Natural
range:
Mexico
Recognition:
A large Agave with straight, comparatively narrow leaves
Landscape
uses:
Brought to Florida presumably as a source of sisal fiber and escaped from
cultivation, becoming an invasive exotic pest, Category II (FEPPC). Sometimes
used in landscaping as a large, imposing agave with the leaves straight,
blue-toned, and smooth-margined or prickle-margined. Prone to forming clumps;
the inflorescences produce numerous bulbils taking root upon dropping. Sisal
fiber is used in making rope, furniture stuffing, mats, and similar coarse
purposes.
