Explanation of name: Doryanthes means spear flower. Palmeri is a personal name.

Natural range: Australia

Recognition: Large (leaves to 6’ long), Agave-like plant differing from Agave by having the flowers red or orange (rarely white) (vs. white or yellowish) outside and the leaves ribbed (vs. mostly more or less smooth). The flower stalk is scarcely longer than the leaves.
