Explanation
of name:
For generic name see Malpighia punicifolia. Coccigera comes from
Latin for berry-bearing.

range:
Caribbean
Recognition:
With bristly simple, opposite leaves resembling those of American Holly, but the
Malpighia leaves opposite and the flowers pinkish or lilac (or nearly white)
with abruptly narrowed petals. Ruffle blossoms in spring/summer and bright red
cherry fruits in the fall. The fruits are red.
Landscape
uses:
A tough, low, spreading, flowering, dense shrub for foundations, lower
layers in multilayered plantings, masses, borders, and hedges. Probably best in
filtered sun. Tolerates full sun or some shade.
