Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg

are-toe-CARP-us  ALL-till-us

Moraceae

Explanation of name:  Artocarpus means bread fruit. Altilis means fat (http://www.winternet.com/~chuckg/dictionary/dictionary.19.html).

Natural range:   In or near the Malayan Region, much spread by ancient human activity

Recognition:  Tree to 100' tall, with milky sap, stipules, and large pinnately lobed leaves.    Fruits enormous, borne on the trunk.  Monoecious.  Breadfruit is similar to Jackfruit but has larger, lobed leaves (as opposed to elliptic leaves).  The fruits are up to about 8" long and pebbled on the surface.

Landscape uses:  Large fruit tree bearing very large fruits.  Needs space.  Propagated by seeds,  transplanting suckers, root cuttings, stem cuttings, and grafted.
