Explanation of name:
Artocarpus means bread fruit (the related Breadfruit, Artocarpus
altilis belongs to this genus). Heterophyllus means variable leaves.
Natural range:
Probably originated in India
Recognition:
Tree with milky sap, stipules, and elliptic leaves. Fruits to 70 pounds or
more, borne on the trunk. Monoecious
Related are: Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis
with lobed leaves), and Marang, Tarap (Artocarpus odoratissimus with
leaves larger and more irregular in outline than Jackfruit, sometimes with a few
lobes) Also related, Cempedak, Artocarpus integer has fruits to about
18” long with golden-brown color.
Landscape uses:
Large fruit tree bearing very large fruits. Needs space.
