Ficus benghalensis

Banyan

Ficus benghalensis L.

FIE-cuss ben-gol-EN-sis

Moraceae

Explanation of name: Ficus is an ancient Latin name for figs (BA1). The specific epithet refers to Benghal, India.

Natural range: India and Malaya

Recognition: Spreading as a one-tree-forest by descent of roots from the branches to the ground. (Other figs do this but not generally as extensively.)  Leaves usually ovate or nearly so, pubescent on both surfaces, with 3 main veins radiating from the base. Fruit reddish, pubescent.

Landscape uses: Capable of attaining massive proportions: 100’ tall and spreading laterally as described above. The roots are invasive. Propagated by cuttings. Escapes cultivation in southernmost Florida (WU2).
