Explanation
of name:
Ficus is an ancient Latin name for figs (BA1). The specific epithet
refers to Benghal, India.
Natural
range:
India and Malaya
Recognition:
Spreading as a one-tree-forest by descent of roots from the branches to the
ground. (Other figs do this but not generally as extensively.) Leaves usually
ovate or nearly so, pubescent on both surfaces, with 3 main veins radiating from
the base. Fruit reddish, pubescent.
Landscape
uses:
Capable of attaining massive proportions: 100’ tall and spreading laterally as
described above. The roots are invasive. Propagated by cuttings. Escapes
cultivation in southernmost Florida (WU2).
