A small yet
widespread family of three genera and some 60 species (LON). Leaves simple,
alternate, resinous. Flowers in small dense spikes. Sex of a plant or branch may
vary from year to year (LON). Flowers minute, unisexual-monoecious or dioecious.
Fruit a warty, waxy drupe (LON). Plants with nitrogen-fixing nodules. Five
species of Myrica are native to the U.S., three of them to Florida, and
one in South Florida (TOM).
