Explanation of name: According to DAV, the generic name comes from Hebrew for hot sand. Specific epithet commemorates Friedrich Sello (Sellow) (1789-1831), German botanist who collected in South America (DEH).

Synonym: Feijoa sellowiana O. Berg.

Natural range: South America

Recognition (BA2): Opposite-leaved evergreen shrub or small tree, the leaf blades elliptic-oblong, to 3”, densely white-pubescent on the undersides. Monoecious with flowers purplish on the inside, the outsides white-pubescent. Flowers solitary, axillary, 4 petals, fleshy, to 1.5 " across, red stamens protruding (DEH).  Fruit edible, reddish or greenish, 2”-3” long. 

Landscape uses: Edible-fruited shrub to 18’ tall. Propagation by seeds, cuttings, layering (BA2) but difficult (DEH).  Can be used as barrier or foundation planting for large buildings or as a hedge (DEH).

 

Notes:  Several cultivars selected for fruit but most not readily available (DEH).
