of name:
The generic name comes from Greek for rose and myrtle (WAT). Tomentosa
means fuzzy.

Recognition:
Opposite-leaved shrub that has become a common invasive exotic in low pine
flatwoods. Most plant parts are downy or fuzzy with light-colored tomentum. The
showy bowl-shaped flowers are rose-pink with numerous showy stamens.
Fruits similar to huckleberries but with thicker,
richer juice, good for jelly. (CHR)
