Blolly, Beefwood

Guapira discolor (K. Spreng.) Little

gwa-PEIR-ah DISS-color

Nyctaginaceae

Explanation of name:    The generic name comes from a Brazilian name (for one or more different species).  Discolor manes “stained,” and in botanical names commonly implies two colors, presumably the leaves.

Natural range:   Florida East Coast from middle of state to the Keys, Caribbean.

Recognition:   Leaves usually more or less opposite but ranging to sub-opposite or sometimes alternate, the blades leathery and glossy with a large white midvein, the tips usually rounded.  Buds rust-colored.   Fruits reddish, the size of a small cherry.

Landscape uses:  Small to medium-sized slow-growing native tree with glossy foliage.  Very salt tolerant
