Explanation
of name:
Phaius is Greek for dusky. The specific epithet honors the French Lady
Tankerville (DAV).

Although sometimes spelled differently, the original and correct spelling of the
specific epithet is tankervilleae.

Recognition:
Large variable terrestrial orchids standing 3’ tall and having large (5”), showy
flowers, the sepals and non-labellum petals radiating, brownish to purplish, the
labellum rolled into a tube, this tending to be white basally and
pinkish-purplish distally. Flower colors vary, as recognized by multiple
cultivar names.
