A small
woody family of some 9 genera and 200 species, mostly in Australia and elsewhere
in the Old World Tropics. Leaves simple, alternate (but often clustered into
pseudowhorls), thick, without stipules. Flowers usually radially symmetrical,
sepals and petals 5, free or nearly so. Stamens 5, alternating with the petals.
Ovary with parietal placenta. (Data largely from BA1).
