bam-BOO-sah  mu-TAB-ah-lis

Poaceae

Explanation of nameBambu is an ancient word for Bamboo.  Mutabilis is Latin for changeable (STE).

Natural range: Hainan, China

Recognition:  Delicate, graceful, upright bamboo with white bloom near the nodes that are persistent  on the culms up to about 1.5” in diameter, these having long internodes and rising to 30-40’ tall.  It is fast-growing and generates many canes.  A very strong, straight, green bamboo with fine leaves,  branchless on the lower half.  Its physical appearance is almost identical to B. textilis, perhaps a bit smaller, but with harder wood.  A superior smaller bamboo.  A favorite for elegance and hi-quality wood.

Landscape uses:  Fast growing, erect and forming many canes.  An attractive species for the corner of the yard, or for a hedge or screen.

Other notes:  Resembling and possibly synonymous with B. textilis McClure.
