Explanation
of name:
Phyllostachys comes from Greek phyllo and stachys, leaf and
spike. Aurea means yellow.
Synonym:
Bambusa aurea Carr.
Natural
range:
China, Japan
Recognition:
Mid-sized bamboo to about 15’ tall (BA1) with yellow culms. Leaves saw-toothed
along one edge, usually whitish beneath. Leaf sheaths with purplish spots.
Landscape
uses:
An invasive species not recommended for landscape use
Notes:
Invasive exotic. Listed by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council as a Category
II invasive exotic species. There are numerous cultivars of this abundant,
widespread, much-used bamboo.
