Some 40 genera with 800 species (LON) of herbs, vines, and trees mainly from North Temperate regions.  Leaves alternate, simple, provided at the junction with the stem with a cylindric sheath around the stem, called an ocrea.  Flowers small, numerous, with parts tending to be in 3s, the perianth of one whorl.  Fruit a nut.
