myu-len-BECK-ee-ah ax-ah-LAIR-us

Polygonaceae

Explanation of name: Genus named for H. G. Muehlenbeck (1798-1845), physician in Alcace ((BA1).  Axillaris presumably refers to the axillary flowers.

Natural range: New Zealand

Recognition:  Small, compact, prostrate mat-forming vine/shrub with very small leaves (to 1/4" long) and an ocrea (ring of tissue) around the stem just above the node.  Muehlenbeckia complexa Meissn. is larger (leaves > ¼") and is more vine-like and climbs (BA1).

Landscape uses: Low, sprawling tough shrubbish-vine useful for filling space.    Forms mats.
