Explanation of
name:
Genus named for H. G. Muehlenbeck (1798-1845), physician in Alcace ((BA1).
Axillaris presumably refers to the axillary flowers.
Natural range:
New Zealand
Recognition:
Small, compact, prostrate mat-forming vine/shrub with very small leaves (to 1/4"
long) and an ocrea (ring of tissue) around the stem just above the node.
Muehlenbeckia complexa Meissn. is larger (leaves > ¼") and is more vine-like
and climbs (BA1).
Landscape uses:
Low, sprawling tough shrubbish-vine useful for filling space. Forms mats.
