Explanation
of name:
Dodoanea honors Rembert Dodoens, a Flemish botanist of the 16th
Century. Viscosa means sticky.
Natural
range:
Central and southern Florida (WU1) and widespread in warm climates around the
globe. Dunes, coastal pinelands, hammocks (WU1)
Recognition:
Shrub with glossy dark green rough-textured leaves having the appearance of
being varnished. Three-lobed fruits with waferlike wings in dense clusters on
female plants (the species is dioecious, with separate male and female
individuals).
Landscape
uses:
Highly attractive, tough, coarse-textured partial-shade-tolerant shrub with
showy, wafery fruits, which pass through a red stage. May be propagated from
seeds.
