Leucophyllum frutescens

Texas-Sage

Leucophyllum frutescens (Berland.) I. M. Johnst.

loo-ko-FILL-um  froo-TESS-ensbrassicaceae

Scrophulariaceae

Explanation of name: The generic name means white-leaved.  Frutescens means shrubby.

Natural range: Mexico, Texas

Recognition:  Shrub with small, white-fuzzy opposite leaves. Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, violet

Landscape uses:  Tough, drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant shrub with white-tomentose foliage and attractive flowers.  Can be grown in containers.  The white foliage is a challenge to harmonize with other plants.  This essentially desert species leans toward dry conditions in its preferences.
